Job Description:

Engineer needed to lead and support robust sound and vibration design, development and test qualification processes for new variable speed and sustaining residential products. The S&V engineer will be responsible for implementing sound & vibration control treatment in product design and testing, lead S&V system/component testing in Psych rooms, develop high quality standard work documents, be engaged in agreed terms of requirements, quality review boards, technical review boards, design input to RES engineers for prototype engineering check sample/manufacturing check sample/Pilot stages and assist Quality group in resolving field issues related to sound and vibration. The S&V engineer will work closely with product development teams and component suppliers to develop robust S&V design and lab test procedures to achieve reliable and better sound quality products. The S&V engineer will work closely with S&V team to develop advanced sound and vibration technology (S&V control, testing and analysis) and oversee its implementation in the S&V lab. Candidate should have strong analytical and experimental skills in acoustic and vibration measurement, modeling and analysis. Position involves work ranging from early concept studies to implementation of production sound and vibration treatment. Candidate should be creative and flexible, with the ability to work on problems ranging from analytical modeling to experimental testing and facility design.

The candidate will have responsibility for the following in addition to adhoc assignments as needed.

Develop sound and vibration (S&V) control solutions using analytical and experimental methods including:

  • Plan, design and coordinate test facilities /setups for sound and vibration measurement.

  • Plan and/or conduct experimental testing and carry out data analysis and reporting.

  • Generate written technical proposals and summary reports.

  • Identify solutions to S&V problems by working with product engineers.

  • Implement sound and vibration control in Residential HVAC products.

  • Conduct sound testing, analysis and rating of Residential heating air conditioning products in three broad areas;

  • AHRI and internal standards using conventional reverberation room measurement and open area survey techniques,

  • S&V qualification of HVAC products, R&D investigations and some analytical modeling and

  • Sound Quality assessment of RES HVAC products in Indy SV Labs & at field sites (including physical sound jury’s).

  • Support & conduct correlation testing to validate Vibro-Acoustic & Structural MBD (Model-based Development) FEA Structural Dynamics and Vibro-Acoustic Models

  • Develop high quality standard work procedures for new, novel and improved sound and vibration techniques.

  • Provide product engineers with sound and vibration test support and S&V control solutions and design recommendations to improve product sound and vibration performance while meeting both internal and external AHRI standards for sound, vibration and robustness.

  • Train and mentor the sound & vibration lab technicians in learning and implementing new S&V lab test and measurement techniques

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Complete discrete S&V tasks to meet design and project objectives

  • Apply expert knowledge of Mechanical and Sound & Vibration engineering

  • May manage moderately sized projects or processes.

  • Support subject-matter experts within S&V and MBD (FEA & Vibro-Acoustic modeling) discipline.

  • Making moderate to significant improvements of processes, systems or products to enhance performance of S&V and related FEA modeling workflows.

  • Active participation in S&V system modeling innovation and integration projects

TYPICAL EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

BS Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or BS Acoustical Engineering with 3-5 years of experience. Or MS Mechanical/Aerospace or Acoustical Engineering (preferred) with 1-3 years of work experience.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Strong fundamentals or course work in acoustics, vibration and signal processing

  • Proficient in S&V experimental methods, instrumentation, and measurement systems

  • Some experience in noise and vibration control and noise reduction techniques

  • Experience with organizing test sequences and keeping customers informed of schedule and progress to schedule

  • A working knowledge of basics of digital signal processing (DSP) and Frequency & FFT analysis

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)

  • Working knowledge of MATLAB and a basic programming language

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) and Operational Deflection Shape (ODS) analysis

  • Experience in Sound Intensity measurement techniques and Acoustic Camera use

  • Ability to program data acquisition systems for S&V testing

  • Experience in post processing methodologies and techniques of S&V test data

  • Familiarity with computational modeling (in one or more of FEM, BEM, or other S&V modeling techniques using ANSYS or Siemens Simcenter 3D or ACTRAN Software)

  • Sound Quality analysis using ArtemiS software (by Head Acoustics)

  • Experience in part design (i.e., using Pro-E or Space Claim), prototyping and fabrication

  • Familiarity with HVAC equipment and systems used in Residential Applications

OTHER KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with diverse audiences including cross functional team members, senior leaders, global suppliers, and external customers including service managers and technicians.

  • Self-starter with ability to learn quickly

  • Organized with strong attention to detail
