Climate, Controls & Security (CCS), a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), is seeking a Reliability Engineer for its CCS Americas Residential Development Engineering organization to lead the design for reliability process for Residential HVAC heating and cooling products. This position is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

Lead the design for reliability process for Residential HVAC products (air conditioners, heat pumps, furnace coils & fan coils) per CCS defined product development processes

Work with cross-functional product development teams, marketing, manufacturing and service to establish reliability goals and plans, and insure reliability tasks are carried out during product development

Manage the on-time completion of reliability activities in support of project schedules

Support the development and implementation of new reliability tools and strategies to drive process efficiency and reliability improvement.

Evaluate warranty claims and other failure data to aid in prioritizing project reliability focus

Engage with other UTC business units to share and leverage reliability best practices

Manage prioritization and allocation of testing facilities and resources

Provide leadership to product development teams in test-to-failure, HALT and design robustness initiatives.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Responsible for developing and achieving reliability goals at the product and system levels

  • Contributes to the department or business unit by applying advanced knowledge of one or more functional areas

  • Develops and coaches others

  • Has expert knowledge that extends across multiple disciplines

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess a Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering degree with practical experience as follows.

  • BA/BS degree with 6 to 10 plus years of experience

  • MA/MS degree with 4 to 7 plus years of experience

  • PhD degree with 2 to 4 plus years of experience

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent communication skills are required as this position will support a diverse internal and external customer base

  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills

  • Extensive knowledge of DFMEA methods

  • A familiarity with HVAC products and Carrier products is desired.

  • Knowledge and experience in using and applying accelerated life test models

  • Competency with Reliasoft tools (XFMEA, XFRACAS, etc)

  • ASQ certified reliability engineer given strong consideration

  • Statistical skills (eg: Weibull analysis, reliability growth DOE) preferred

  • Failure analysis and physics-of-failure experience a plus

  • HALT testing experience a plus

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Comply with the EH&S Policy and applicable regulatory and company EH&S rules and requirements

  • Report to supervision, conditions or practices that are either unsafe or that may adversely impact the environment, to ensure prompt resolution of potential hazards

  • Attend scheduled EH&S training events

  • Actively support the organization’s efforts to meet or exceed EH&S goals and plans
