UTAS designs and develops cutting edge gimbaled vision systems and industry-leading UAV autopilots, utilizing latest Electro-Optic (EO) and IR sensor technologies. Proprietary motion control and image stabilization methods are used in conjunction with video DSP, tracking and object recognition to achieve state-of-the-art performance. You will be developing solutions for multiple product lines while working as a member of a tightly integrated cross-functional product team.

The Senior Optical Systems Engineer will be primarily responsible for analyses, testing, and validation of photonics systems used to create imagery. This role is the subject matter expert (SME) in Hood River for all aspects of these imaging systems from gimbal design through manufacture. This includes analytic modeling and design optimization of focal plane array (FPA) and zoom lens systems operating in the; VIS, SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR bands to meet the required image quality metrics. The Optical Systems Engineer will work cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, software and systems engineers to achieve high resolution video on various gimbal platforms. Design responsibilities include; developing optical system models using NV-IPM, (or equivalent analytic tools sets), to perform simulations, sensitivity analyses, tolerancing and optimizing opto-mechanical and electro-optical sub-systems. As the Optical Systems SME the role supports manufacturing, supply chain and external suppliers by generating specifications and Acceptance Test Plans (ATP) for all things optical.

Qualification:

  • Development of predictive optical system models

  • Electro-Optic (E/O) and infrared (IR) sensor and camera systems

  • Image quality testing and analyses, (e.g. 1951 USAF bar chart assessment, MTF, SFR, etc)

  • Image artifact analysis tools, (e.g. Imatest)

  • Sequential ray-trace modeling, (e.g. Zemax, Code V, etc)

  • Optical component, lens systems, and camera specification

  • Thin film coating specification

  • Optical metrology and instrumentation

  • Optical fabrication techniques

  • Opto-mechanical design and trade studies

  • SolidWorks experience a plus

  • Knowledge of Product Life Cycle (PLC) and Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes

  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present information to various audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet committed deadlines

  • US Citizenship
