Job Description

Lead the division-wide organization in development, management, and implementation of the technology strategy and is responsible for the execution of the strategy through innovation projects. Accountable for the technology budget for Landing Gear. Lead the division-wide organization in development, management, and implementation of the technology strategy and is responsible for the execution of the strategy through innovation projects. Essential Responsibilities

Responsibility A : Technology strategy 30%

  • Lead the development and annual refresh of the Landing Gear Technology strategy, through the execution of an annual event, considering marketplace competitive assessment

  • Develop the annual technology project waterline and commensurate budget allocationInvestigate potential airframe, university, or other external partnerships and manage intellectual property control.

  • Conduct yearly airframe and airline VOC and utilize as input into the technology strategy process

  • Manage technology project TRL and expense progression and support TRL progression reviews and reporting with Central Engineering

  • Continually review and improve the Technology strategy development process and the technology/innovation execution process

  • Develop invention disclosure targets and effective metrics/communication plan to achieve them

Responsibility B : Innovation/technology execution 30%

  • Manage the execution of all technology projects through process guidance and support to project leads

  • Lead one or more strategic technology projects as necessary

  • Develop resource and budget plans, with the support of project leads and engineering management, to enable the execution of the technology projects. This will be a critical skill as there will be no employees reporting directly to this position.

  • Ensure compliance with all Landing Systems and Central Engineering technology development processes

Responsibility C : Training, mentoring and providing concurrent guidance and input to all of engineering 20%

  • Support engineering training and mentoring considering:

  • Technology strategy development

  • Technology implementation

  • Innovation management

  • Problem Resolution

  • Conduct review/participates in Engineering investigations as necessary to ensure robust Root Cause and Corrective Action

  • Participate in resource/manpower strategic discussions

Responsibility D : Intellectual property management 20%

  • Develop the Landing Gear strategy and methods for creating and protecting an intellectual property (IP) workspace tied to the Technology strategy

  • Execute the IP workspace strategy through research, VoC’s, competitive assessments, invention disclosures, and patent applications, working with all available Landing Gear, Central Engineering, UTAS and Legal resources

Qualification:

​​ Knowledge and Skill

Required:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of design, analysis, and manufacturing of complex mechanical systems and methods.

  • Knowledge of complex mechanical systems competitor strategies, tactics, and capabilities

  • Detailed knowledge of intellectual property and patent process.

  • Minimum of 15 years experience in the design and certification of complex mechanical systems designs.

  • Minimum of 5 years leading complex mechanical systems design programs or technology projects.

Interactions, either internal or external, that are required for the job:

  • Innovation discussions and reviews with customers, engineering management, BU management and program IPT members.

  • ​Chairing TRL reviews and providing input and guidance.

  • Participate in policy deployment meetings.

  • Participate in new business capture team discussions and help to develop winning strategies.

Preferred

  • Comprehensive knowledge of aircraft component design, analysis, and manufacturing methods.

  • Detailed knowledge of aircraft component design configuration and preliminary designs.

  • Knowledge of existing and historical landing gear and aircraft advanced technologies.

  • Established technical relationships and knowledge of major airframe customers.
