The newly-created Model Based Digital Thread Center of Expertise (DTCOE) aims to demonstrate 2X or more acceleration in product development and production ramp timelines by deploying an end-to-end digital model thread through all phases of design, manufacturing, and in-service operation of the most complex UTC products.

The DTCOE is a three-year initiative to develop and demonstrate a fully digital product design, manufacturing, and in-service support approach. The team will develop a toolchain that supports digital continuity across different levels of model fidelity, different physics domains, and different levels of abstraction, such that the product, the manufacturing system, and the operating environment are represented. Such a toolchain will support an agile design flow for product development, the co-design and co-optimization of the product and manufacturing environment, and improved analytics of in-service product data. Within the three year timeframe, the DTCOE will apply this toolchain and methodology to a complex UTC product such as a small jet engine to demonstrate scalability, quantify value, and prepare for enterprise-wide industrialization.

As the Thermo Fluid Dynamics Expert you will lead the modeling and methods definition and specification of multi-physics computational modeling of cyber-physical systems serving the needs of the end-to-end model-based digital thread.

You will collaborate with the other members of the modeling and methods team, the product team as well as with the toolchain team.

Key job responsibilities:

  • Create innovative solutions for multi-physics modeling and analysis of aerospace products aspects such as system performance, aero dynamics/aeronautics, thermodynamics, aero thermal analysis, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, aero mechanics, and acoustics.

  • Drive specifications and development of software tools, tool integration, modeling and modeling methodology for the analysis in the specified areas. This includes model compatibility between different fidelity levels as well as at the interfaces between different physical domains.

  • Build, maintain, and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Speak inspirationally about the project to internal and external audiences

  • Conduct regular project reviews

  • Collaborate effectively with the members of the organization

Qualification:

  • Breadth and depth of knowledge in multi-physics computational modeling

  • Breadth and depth of knowledge of 3D CFD, physics, stress, durability and mesh generation modeling, analysis methods, algorithms and tools

  • Knowledge of leading edge commercial tools capabilities and current limitations

  • Depth in thermal, fluid dynamics and structural analysis of turbomachinery

  • Aerospace product development (a plus if it’s engines) process (including both engineering and manufacturing) with a broad understanding of adjacent disciplines and digital technologies

  • Superlative communication skills across both digital and physical domains

  • An unreasonable combination of risk-tolerance, impatience, optimism, empathy, and vision, and a burning desire to make a difference

Education: PhD or Master’s degree in Systems, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering or related field (7+ years’ experience), or Bachelor’s degree in Systems, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering or related field with 9+ years’ experience.
