Principal Machine Learning Researcher

We are looking for a scientist or engineer who has a passion for innovation and the drive to see new technology mature into systems solutions. A successful candidate must be an accomplished developer or engineer and self-starter with a demonstrated ability to move concepts through engineering demonstrations towards product prototype. The Immersive and Autonomous Systems (IAS) department of Collins Aerospace Advanced Technology Mission Systems division has an opening in the area of Automated Reasoning at the level of senior research scientist. Candidates meeting a substantial subset of the criteria listed below are encouraged to apply. The role of Advanced Technology groups is to bridge earlier stage research into more mature development artifacts for eventual product development.

Automated reasoning is a broad area that finds applications in knowledge acquisition and representation, formal modeling, high-level information fusion, belief revision, decision making, learning, and formal analysis of systems. Within UTC, the group will be supporting several business activities in developing advanced tools for building complex software systems and for the development of knowledge based agents. In particular, we are interested in candidates that will bring new expertise for enhancing autonomous capabilities of UTC’s product portfolio, processes, and services. Successful candidates will lead the use of these technologies for the next generation aircraft and propulsion systems, urban mobility and building automation systems. In this role the candidates are expected to work both with United Technology Research Center (UTRC) researchers and Collins Aerospace business unit engineers to mature and transition technologies into capability demonstrations.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A deep understanding of theory and practical application of machine learning methods, to include neural net, support vector machines, RRTs, MDPs, Bayesian or ML algorithms and numerical methods.

  • A broad understanding of ML/AI techniques relevant to vehicle autonomy, and the advantages and limitations.

  • Experience implementing relevant ML techniques to solve vehicle control problems (both navigation and sensor/payload operations).

  • Aware of state of the art and emerging techniques showing promise in relevant application areas. Be capable of applying such techniques to real-world engineering problems.

  • Prefer experience implementing ML in real-time, embedded systems context, and familiarity with dealing with the typical constraints of such systems. (limited memory, GPU resources).

  • Experience with real-time/embedded computing systems highly desirable.

Additionally, applicants are expected to:

  • Work on hard problems with little to no supervision, yet ensuring good coordination with team members and leader for attaining project goals.

  • Be a good team player, and mentor to other intelligent systems engineering staff

  • Be able to act as principal investigator, leading multidisciplinary teams focused on creative, integrated solutions for business and technical challenges

  • Be able to communicate openly and effectively to both technical peers and senior management.

  • Be comfortable writing technical papers and reports and making presentations to technical and business leader audiences.

  • Possess a Minimum of M.S. in Computer Science or relevant Engineering discipline with at least 5 years of experience. Preferred: Ph.D. in disciplines as outlined above and at least 2-3 years of postdoctoral experience.

The candidate should have a solid background in the area of automated reasoning/Computer Science/AI. In particular, they should be familiar with logic and should have a good background in algorithm design and general Computer Science/AI curriculum. In addition, the candidate should be comfortable with fast-paced, rigorous software development and be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, team environment focused on innovation.

Requirements:

  • Possess a Minimum of M.S. in Computer Science or relevant Engineering discipline with at least 5 years of experience. Preferred: Ph.D. in disciplines as outlined above and at least 2-3 years of postdoctoral experience.

  • Active DOD security clearance or ability to obtain

  • US Citizenship

  • A deep understanding of theory and practical application of machine learning methods, to include neural net, support vector machines, RRTs, MDPs, Bayesian or ML algorithms and numerical methods.

  • A broad understanding of ML/AI techniques relevant to vehicle autonomy, and the advantages and limitations.
