Role Overview

This position is for a senior software engineering professional with deep knowledge and highly developed technical expertise. The successful candidate produces software requirements, designs and implements software, creates and executes test cases and procedures to verify proper software operation on host and integration into a larger system. Additional responsibilities include: Making recommendations on changes in the selection and application of software production components to management, presenting at design reviews, and coordinating with other organizations. This position supports growth in our airborne router product family including airborne and ground based product and system development.

Primary Responsibilities

The software engineer will lead, plan, develop, design and test software and applications according to Collins Aerospace processes and procedures with minimal supervision. The software engineer tasks include the following:

  • Coach and mentor software team.

  • Create and approve software artifacts.

  • Interface with external customers and certification authorities.

  • Interface with internal customers and cross-functional teams.

  • Develop compliant software artifacts

  • Provide estimations for software pursuits.

  • Lead software teams including outsourced and offshore resources.

  • Requirements generation, software architecture and design, coding and unit testing, integration, verification, validation, and creation of documentation for existing and new products

  • Execute development process is in accordance with regulated processes including RTCA DO-178B/C for certification of airborne systems or RTCA DO-278 for ground systems

  • Monitor and report project execution using standard metrics for scheduling and budget to leadership

  • Integrate software with embedded target hardware

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline (STEM degree is highly preferred)

  • 7 years of prior relevant experience or 5 years of prior relevant experience with an Advanced degree.

  • Linux development experience

  • C, C++, Python, JSON, XML experience

  • Excellent communications skills (verbal, written, and presentation)

  • Proficient skills in embedded software engineering processes and methodologies

  • The candidate should be highly motivated, a self-starter, able to think big, take action, and help others succeed.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with Jenkins, Yocto, or BuildRoot

  • Experience with ALM tools such as TFS/MS DevOps and/or Atlassian (Jira, Confluence, BitBucket)

  • Experience with IOT technologies

  • Experience with wireless communication (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Cellular)

  • Agile and/or SAFe experience

  • Web Development experience using PHP, JavaScript, HTML5, AngularJS, web frameworks

  • Security experience using SELinux, Firewalls, LDAP, PKI authentication experience is a plus

  • Previous work experience developing software products in a regulated environment

  • Potential use of Model Based Design (MBD) techniques in the development life cycle process
