About Us

United Technologies Corporation (UTC) is a leader in the commercial aerospace, defense, and building industries. From elevators in the Burj Kalifa to life support systems in the International Space Station, our companies' products touch more than half of the world’s population every day, keeping people safe in challenging environments and comfortable and secure at home.

UT Digital partners with UTC’s businesses on vital challenges. A global team of 2500 creates software that makes UTC’s products and services more useful and relevant to the people who rely on them. As part of UT Digital, the newly formed, Brooklyn-based Digital Accelerator is home to a collective of product designers, engineers, and data scientists that are shaping the future of building systems, cities and aerospace.

The Digital Accelerator is seeking highly skilled design and technology practitioners that can wrangle the complex challenges at the heart of UTC’s businesses and leaders that can help our group grow. We engage with an array of sophisticated user experience and business domains, from industrial IoT and analytics that power smart products, factories and cities, to connected customer experiences that transform how products are manufactured, used and serviced.

If you are passionate about building things that matter, come work with us in Dumbo.

Position

We are seeking an Interaction Design Lead to drive the creation of next-generation of UTC applications, products and services. You must be skilled, strategic, collaborative and comfortable with complexity, systemic and organizational alike. Your hands-on leadership and design acumen will drive what’s possible for your team and for the products you help create.

Responsibilities include:

  • Driving and managing all interaction design related activities and outputs for a given development effort

  • Working collaboratively with customers, business stakeholders and your project team (e.g., product managers, project managers, strategists, researchers, product designers, data scientists and developers)

  • Close collaboration with business leads and product managers to define and prioritize features and structure supporting design work

  • Helping define research needs, participating in primary and secondary research activities and managing the ingestion, interpretation and visualization of research findings

  • Leading the development of personas, journey maps and other user-centered design artifacts that articulate the conceptual underpinnings of a project

  • Helping teams cohere around a design vision and effectively collaborate to bring it to life; guiding them through the iterative development of designs, from early concepts to detailed product designs

  • Leading the creation of user flows, wireframes and other intermediate artifacts that provide the scaffolding that higher-fidelity disciplines—visual designers and technologists—need to work effectively

  • Leading the presentation of design work to various internal and external business stakeholders

  • Mentoring more junior designers; helping develop their problem-solving skills and design sensibilities

  • Designing with a systems mindset; setting the stage for the use of, and contribution to, design systems leveraged across various products and UTC businesses

Qualification:

  • 12+ years of related experience

  • Propensity for self-directed problem-solving and the ability to work with limited guidance

  • Deep expertise in user-centered design methods; extensive experience connecting business and user needs to design decisions

  • Ability to quickly understand and gain fluency with complex problems and drive elegant solutions that address them

  • Deep strategic and systems thinking skills; fluency with conceptual considerations such as modularity, hierarchy, inheritance and flow

  • Expertise in identifying, articulating and leveraging design patterns and understanding why they should or shouldn’t be used

  • Familiarity with concerns and constraints that inform product experiences (distinct from websites and other media)

  • Strong collaboration and team leadership skills; comfort guiding and working with cross-functional teams (IRL and remote), including aligning on team needs, priorities and constraints, resolving potential conflicts before they start and working productively under tight deadlines

  • Expertise in creating and directing the creation of high-quality visual artifacts that drive understanding between users, team members and project stakeholders—diagrams, presentations, wireframes, et al.

  • Experience managing and working with component-based design systems

  • Mastery of digital design tools, such as Sketch, Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator, et al. and presentation tools, such as PowerPoint

  • Fluency with simple prototyping tools, such as InVision, and experience with more advanced prototyping tools that offer richer interaction and animation capabilities, such as Principle or Framer

  • Experience designing around technical constraints; general familiarity with the technology underpinnings of interfaces, including presentation layer code (JavaScript/CSS/HTML, Objective-C, etc.) and architectural considerations for web and mobile experiences

  • Familiarity with agile methodologies, particularly as they pertain to design

  • Strong presentation, written and verbal communication skills
