UTC Aerospace Systems is seeking to fill a Senior Manufacturing Engineering position at our Union, WV manufacturing facility. Heated products and de-icing equipment for military and commercial aerospace applications are manufactured at this location. The successful candidate will lead the manufacturing engineering department in all activities including, but not limited to, sustaining support of day-to-day operations, new product implementation, project/program management, process development/improvement, and identifying/eliminating causes of poor quality.

The primary objective of this Engineering Technician position is to provide complex technical support to the Design Engineering team in support of the ice protection and specialty heated product lines. This role supports both new product introduction and sustaining engineering. New Product Introduction supports preliminary design, detailed design and validation/verification testing phases of these programs. Sustaining Engineering roles include design related support activities associated with field service issues to facilitate business goals.

Examples of specific responsibilities include:

  • Support qualification testing including test setups, performing tests, writing procedures and reports in an accurate and detailed manner.

  • Maintenance and/or calibration of general and custom test equipment and/or laboratory.

  • Support Design Engineering in the development and testing of products for ice protection, specialty heated products, and materials development.

  • Support pneumatic de-icer testing including test de-icer installations, life cycle testing, inflation height testing, Icing Wind Tunnel testing, and Rain Erosion Testing.

  • Provide onsite pneumatic de-icer installation training to customers and certified installation centers.

  • Assist in the building and testing of various prototypes, test rigs, equipment and/or products, installations, checkout fixtures and test equipment, typically in a self-directed work environment.

  • Support Icing Wind Tunnel and Rain Erosion Silo as a certified operator for internal and external customers.

  • Resolving quality issues that arise during development or field returns by performing RCCA, detailed documentation of findings, and implementation of corrective actions.

  • Support production related issues with products, test equipment or procedures.

  • Proven hands-on work capabilities and knowledge of standard lab equipment.

  • Be capable of performing technical assignments in support of new product design, production implementation and troubleshooting activities involving various materials, electrical and mechanical processes while also providing thorough documentation of activities performed.

  • Must be able to operate mechanical and electrical tools and equipment.

  • Have a solid understanding of basic mechanical and electrical engineering principles.

  • Possess practical, hands-on skills and an ability to work collaboratively with technical personnel.

  • Experience working hands on building and testing products/prototypes.

  • Have a good understanding of fabrication processes.

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision and deliver meaningful results.

  • Proficiency in technical knowledge and use of drawings, specifications and test procedures.

  • Travel availability is necessary, as required to support the position at outside labs, WV production, etc.

Highly preferred qualifications:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams as required.

  • Proficiency in the use of various pertinent pieces of laboratory/test equipment including mechanical testing, mixing, milling, calendering, cutting, environmental chambers, ovens and autoclave equipment a plus.

  • Experience writing and debugging Labview programs a plus.

  • Experience designing and fabricating electronic or mechanical test fixtures a plus

  • Elastomeric and composite materials experience a plus.

  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration or modification of hardware, fixtures, and software.

  • 4-year Technical Degree

Position may require direct contact with customers, suppliers, and outside test labs. Travel is required, 5% on average but possibly as high as 10%. Travel may include international destinations.

Education: AA/AS degree, Technical/Business School Certificate or Diploma, Skilled Trades Apprenticeship, or other post high school training (2 years duration) with minimum of 5 years’ experience
