The Material Characterization Laboratory in Pratt & Whitney’s Materials and Processes Engineering Department is seeking an engineering professional to lead and execute residual stress measurements and related programs. Responsibilities will include managing residual stress tasks by diffraction and mechanical relaxation-based methods, residual stress measurement plan development, data collection, analysis, interpretation, reporting and integration of residual stress considerations into various disciplines at P&W. Candidates should have knowledge of various residual stress measurement techniques to enable determining applicability for P&W’s applications and will be expected to initiate collaborative efforts with external sources to develop new measurement methods that can complement in-house capabilities. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated technical leader with the ability to deliver innovative solutions in the field of residual stress.


  • Manage residual stress measurement tasks

  • Data collection and analysis of residual stress using diffraction and mechanical methods

  • Work with internal customers to define measurement plan, timeline and associated cost

  • Report write-up and presentation

  • Work with internal customers to define the needed data and data applicability

  • Work with out-side laboratories to expand internally available capabilities

  • Integrate residual stress measurement into various disciplines and applications within P&W


  • Hands on experience with residual stress measurement methods is required

  • Project management experience is required

  • Aerospace industry experience is an asset

  • Experience with ANSYS or ABAQUS is a plus
