The Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Additive Manufacturing Process Modeler, Core Technology, Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence.
UTC is a $60 billion company that supplies products and services to the aerospace and building services industries. The newly-formed UTC Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (CoE), centrally hosted at UTC’s Research Center, will encompass a critical mass of Additive Manufacturing process and industrialization experts, the necessary equipment, and develop the strategic collaborations needed to rapidly mature the technology and manufacturing readiness of the critical technologies that are required to accelerate the development, transition, and deployment of additive manufactured products and systems for UTC’s business units (UTC Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Otis Elevator, UTC Climate, Controls, & Security).
The Additive Manufacturing Process Modeler, Core Technology position has a broad range of activities and responsibilities that are important to the effective operation of the Additive Manufacturing (AM) CoE, including:
Constitutive modeling of bulk material properties,
Designing and conducting critical experiments required to validate models and using in situ sensor data,
Object oriented computer programming (java, C++, Matlab, etc.), and
Finite element modeling (ANSYS, DEFORM, etc.)
Multi-physics modeling of stress/strain, heat transfer, melting/solidification, energy absorption, microstructure evolution, property prediction, and/or defect prediction.
The candidate should have a demonstrated capability to develop simulation codes, including those for various types of directed energy additive manufacturing operations. This includes modeling of energy sources and raw material types (wire and powder). The individual must also have extensive experience using finite element modeling codes as well as having the ability to model in a multi-physics environment. The individual provide leadership to multi-discipline project teams to create, analyze, validate and transfer software tools into the manufacturing environment within UTC’s business units, including Pratt & Whitney, UT Aerospace Systems, CCS, and Otis. The primary goal of the modeling activity is to provide deeper understanding of the process physics which will ultimately reduce the time required to develop new processes and/or new components.
The successful candidate should have proven expertise in developing physics-based models for additive manufacturing and using commercially available software, such as CUBES for various AM applications. The candidate should have experience in the processing of both aerospace and commercial alloys using directed energy additive manufacturing. Experience writing proposals for government contracts is also required. She/he must be able to effectively lead a multidisciplinary, collaborative team to deliver key milestones of a project and have demonstrated both verbal and written communication skills.
US Citizenship or US Permanent Resident status required.
10% travel may be required.
