The Power Electronics Group within the United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) has an exciting employment opportunity for a Principal Engineer, Power Electronics.

The candidate is expected to interact with the UTRC Program Offices and United Technologies Corporation (UTC) business units to enhance existing programs in the area of design of power electronics circuits and systems for a large range of UTC products.

The candidate must be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment focused on innovation and be able to partner with leading worldwide institutions (university, government agencies, and national labs, professional organizations) to meet organizational objectives. The candidate will need to have exceptional communication skills, capable of interacting with UTRC management and external customers. Additionally, the candidate must be able to provide timely, accurate and detailed reports and presentations.

The Principal Engineer, Power Electronics will lead research and development activities related to power electronics circuits and systems with minimum supervision. UTRC is interested in expanding the power electronics capability and is looking for individuals able to lead initiatives in the areas of:

-High power density converters

-High frequency converters (100s of kHz up to 1 MHz)

-High voltage converters and systems (1-2 kV)

-Application of wide-band-gap-device technology

-High temperature electronics and systems

-Highly integrated systems / advanced packaging and manufacturing

-Hardware-in-loop and other advanced modeling/simulation techniques

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading an initiative that expands the team capability, grows the knowledge base and generates IP resulting in multi-million dollar externally-funded program portfolio aligned primarily with DoD interests (but also linking to potential DoE applications). Ultimate impact of the initiative will be measured by the successful transition of technology to the UTC businesses, working in conjunction with the respective UTRC program offices.

The individual will also perform other support activities for the various UTC businesses as needed, and other tasks as assigned by the group leader.

Qualification:

Expert knowledge with industrial or academic experience in the areas of design, modeling, analysis, and simulation of power electronic systems. Particular areas of expertise include (but not limited to) motor drives, high power density converters, complex electric power systems and Hardware-in-Loop and other advanced modeling/simulation techniques. Experience with production processes for manufacturing and assembly of electronics is highly desirable.

The candidate must have a significant portfolio of peer reviewed and refereed publications in the general field of power electronics. The job requires peer recognized achievement and leadership in the area of power electronics design, including modeling and prototyping as well as controls. A specific list of publications with title, date and forum must be submitted.

Demonstrated ability to engage with government agencies to influence research direction, shape RFPs and secure funding. Track record of effective university and research institution partnerships. At least three significant contract awards with at least one of them being > $2M. A specific list of contract awards with title, date, funding agency and academic/industry partners must be submitted.

The ideal candidate would be an individual recognized internally and externally for her or his ability to innovate and successfully develop and transition technology to industry. Leadership in industry partnerships or initiatives, co-developed journal papers, and relevant patent portfolio is highly desirable.

Solid project management background with experience managing a multidisciplinary project portfolio or leading initiatives is highly desirable.

US Citizen or US Person required for this position.

Education: Minimum: M.S. in Electrical Engineering with at least 15 years of relevant research or industry experience.

Preferred: Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with at least 10 years of relevant research or industry experience.
